This collaborative governance model has been in place since CAPER was established in 1986, ensuring that the registry reflects the shared priorities of the organizations responsible for training, certifying, and planning the physician workforce nationally.
Participating organizations
The CAPER Committee brings together the organizations that shape postgraduate medical education and workforce planning in Canada. Each is represented on the Committee and contributes to setting CAPER's direction.
- Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC)
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
- Medical Council of Canada (MCC)
- Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)
- Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI)
- Resident Doctors of Canada
- Canadian Medical Association (CMA)
Role of the Committee
The Committee establishes the policy framework that governs how data is collected, maintained, and released. Member organizations support CAPER financially and provide subject-matter expertise, ensuring the registry remains accurate, consistent, and useful for medical workforce planning across the country.
CAPER is incorporated within the by-laws of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, which provides its institutional home while the broader Committee guides its mandate.
